Leaving the kids at home alone for the first time can be an agonizing decision – are they ready? Is it safe? Here are a few things to consider before you leave your children home unattended for the first time
Have the Talk: Make sure you set up hard and fast boundaries in the household for what’s acceptable and what’s not. Talk about strangers at the door and kitchen safety – are they allowed to take a bath? What about open the garage door? Everything should be discussed.
Take Precautions: Visit a local security system website (hint: search something like home security Ft. Lauderdale) and invest in a safe to lock up guns and knives. Leave nothing to chance when your kids are alone for the first time or the fortieth.
Talk to a Neighbor: Talk to a trusted neighbor and let them in on your situation. Ask them to call and check on the kids every couple of hours and walk the perimeter of the house once (warn the kids) to make sure everything seems on the up and up.
